YOGA AT BOYD’S STATION GALLERY
Melissa Whalen | Yoga Instructor
I have often been asked what my typical yoga class is like, so I thought I’d share that here. Here’s a loose rundown of a typical class sequence:
Opening: “Settling in”, where we bring our attention to the present moment- our bodies, minds, and breath. We do a short breathing exercise (nothing woo-woo) and then move into stretching either on our backs or in a seated position or a combination.
Warm-up: We move into the hands and knees position and begin movements aimed at warming up or spine, core, and shoulders.
Sun-salutations- This is a sequence of yoga poses that we do during each practice to get our hearts pumping, stretch and strengthen our bodies to prepare for the remainder of the practice.
The “main” sequence- this portion changes each week. This section is primarily based on standing poses, but can also include poses closer to the ground. We’ve worked on all kinds of poses here- poses for strengthening various parts of the body, poses to increase flexibility, and poses to work on balance. You never know what you’re going to get from week to week here.
Cool-down- This is our winding down section where we slow down and work on poses closer to the ground (from our bellies, backs, or seated position).
Savasana/closing- This is our productive rest phase and a favorite section for almost everyone! We lie on our backs and let our bodies and minds rest for a few minutes before closing.
As always, message me if you have any questions!
